Reasons it could have been a race:
1. People were running
2. T-shirt came with registration fee
3. Mile split callers
4. Watermelon at the finish
Reasons I’m not sure if it actually was a race:
1. There are more main characters still alive on Lost than there were runners today
2. I’m about 99 percent sure the Start/Finish line moved after the race began
3. My first mile was clocked at 5:23… yeah, right.
4. After about the first 15 runners, the finish line timer stopped yelling out times.
I ran a 25:12, finishing 8th out of about 30 or so (OK, so maybe the Lost reference was over-exaggerating a bit). I think the leader ran a 22 or somewhere around there.
But who’s counting? Like I said last night, it’s for a good cause. A lot of the volunteers were in good spirits, despite the threatening rain clouds overhead and suffocating humidity. The walk/trot was a good community event for a good organization.
The race… trot thing
For the first mile or so, I ran with a guy wearing a pair of Vibram Five Fingers. Why people run in those things I’ll never understand. He said he had to change his running form to get used to them. He was almost running on just his toes. Looked painful to me.
Despite what the split caller said, my first mile was probably around 7-7:30. I knew I probably wasn’t going to keep that pace.
Around the second mile I realized how humid it actually was. I think the temperature was around 65 with 80 percent humidity. My mouth dried out and I started dry heaving.
Near the end of the race two women passed me. I think one was in high school or younger. A little kid who couldn’t have been older than 7th grade finished ahead of me too. Man, I’m out of shape.
And my ankle is killing me right now.
Still, I felt pretty good today. Just getting out and running is a great feeling. I love local races (trots, walks, whatever) too. It was great to see people out supporting Serenity Farms and getting a good workout too.
I’m leaving early next week for Ocean City, N.J., for a Campus Crusade Summer Project (follow mine and other Kent State students’ summers at kentcru.wordpress.com). So my next entry, run and race will most likely be from the Jersey Shore. Sweet.
Go out and run.
